The Holy Rosary brings us closer to God
Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
On October 7 we celebrate the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Holy Rosary. This celebration was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in gratitude to the Virgin for her help in the victory over the Turks in the battle of Lepanto. The Victory of the Holy League. The Christian coalition was in charge of halting the expansion of the Turks advancing through the Mediterranean that was putting Christianity at risk. The Christians prayed the Holy Rosary tirelessly on the eve of October 7, 1571. They begged for the help and protection of Our Holy Mother of the Heaven. Pope St. Pius V, in gratitude to the Virgin, instituted the feast of the Virgin of Victories on the first Sunday of October and added the title of «Mary Help of Christians» to the litanies given to the Mother of God. Later, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast to that of Our Lady of the Rosary, and Clement XI extended the holiday to the entire Western Church. Later the festival was established specifically on October 7.

History of the Holy Rosary.
The prayer of the Holy Rosary emerged around the year 800 AD from monasteries, where monks continually recited the 150 psalms of David. Most Christians could not pray like that because they had too little knowledge of Latin. Therefore, the Church proposed replacing the 150 psalms, with 150 Hail Marys, divided into fifteen sets of ten. This «short rosary» was called «the psalter of the Virgin.» The word Rosary means ‘Crown of Roses’. The Virgin Mary has revealed to many people that every time they pray a Hail Mary they give her the gift of a rose and for each full Rosary they give her the gift of a crown of roses. The Holy Church received the Rosary in its current form in the year 1214 in a miraculous way: the Virgin appeared to Saint Dominic of Guzmán, near the city of Toulouse in France. She gave him a Rosary and said: _ “Dominic, go preach my Rosary everywhere. I entrust it to you and your followers. The Rosary will be a ready and effective remedy against the evils of humanity. ”
The Holy Rosary is considered the perfect prayer because we meditate on the majestic history of our salvation. Let us pray the Rosary every day, with intense devotion! *

Mental and vocal prayer.
The Rosary contains two realities: a mental and a spoken prayer, meditating on the mysteries of Christ to facilitate its assimilation through repetition. This applies above all to the Hail Mary, which is repeated ten times in each mystery. If we consider this repetition superficially, one might think that the Rosary is a dry and boring practice. On the other hand, if it is taken as an expression of love that does not tire of addressing the loved one, it becomes a desire to be more fully engaged with Christ! The insistent repetition in the prayer is not a defect but it is the characteristic of litany prayer, of repetition, whose origin can be found in the synagogue. There, there was this type of prayer that consisted in 18 blessings which listed the different social categories of people and the intentions that were being prayed for. St. Paul, in a letter to Timothy, refers to this custom: “First of all I recommend that prayers, supplications and thanksgiving be made for all men; for the kings and for all those in positions of authority, so that we can live a quiet and peaceful life with mercy and dignity ”. In the writings of the first Fathers of the Church, we can also find examples of the type of litany prayer (for example in the prayer of St. Clement Romano or in the letter of St. Polycarp and in the records of his martyrdom). Mental prayer in the Holy Rosary consists in the meditation of the main mysteries of the life, death and glory of Jesus Christ and his Blessed Mother.
San Pius X said: «The Rosary is of all the prayers the most beautiful, the richest in thanks and the one that most pleases the Blessed Virgin.»

Components of the Rosary: the essential elements.
1.- Initial Invocations.
In practice, there are several ways to start the Rosary: by praying the Creed, or with some invocation of a Psalm such as «My God, come to my aid, Lord hurry to help me.» These and other similar ways are equally legitimate, since they achieve the objective of facilitating contemplation.
2.- Announcing the Mystery to meditate on.
It is necessary to state the mystery to meditate on for each of the 5 sets of 10 Holy Marys. A gospel reading is also recommended to facilitate meditation.
3.- The Glory Be
This is a very old prayer of praise, which for many centuries was recited in Latin. It is recited at the end of each mystery. The prayer in praise of the Trinity is the goal of Christian contemplation.
4.- The ejaculatory prayer
Usually after the Glory there follows an ejaculatory that varies according to customs, for example: _ «Mary, Mother of Grace, Mother of Mercy, in life and death, protect us great Lady» ._ In Fatima, Our Lady asked the little shepherds to say the following prayer at the end of each mystery: «Oh, my Jesus, forgive us, deliver us from the fire of hell, take all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need.» _.
5.- Spontaneous prayer to reach the fruit of the mystery.
Pope John Paul II in the apostolic letter ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE also recommends that each mystery conclude with a prayer aimed at reaching the specific fruits of the mystery meditation.
6.- Prayer for the intentions of the Pope.
The Rosary must conclude by praying for the intentions of the Pope: Exaltation of the Holy Catholic Church, Elimination of heresy, Propagation of Faith, Conversion of sinners, Peace and harmony among Christian leaders and the rest of the Christian people.
San Píus of Pietrelcina said: “Love the Virgin and may she be loved. Always recite the Rosary! ”

Components of the Rosary: Optional Prayers
1.- The litanies
The litany is a supplication that is made to God in a certain order, invoking the Holy Trinity, with Jesus Christ, the Virgin and the Saints acting as mediators. The oldest litanies, after those of the Saints, (around the year 595) are those of the Blessed Virgin. They are known as litanies of Loreto, and were approved by Sixtus V in 1587.
2.- The Salve Regina
The Salve is a very old prayer. There are records of its existence from the eleventh century. This prayer is formed by a succession of sweet prayers from children to their mother. In it we recognize our fragility and the need we have for her comfort, shelter and intercession to obtain the graces necessary for our salvation.
The litanies and the Salve come from deep within when the person feels the need to dedicate worship to the Blessed Virgin, to culminate the inner path of living contact with the mystery of Christ and his Blessed Mother.
Both the litanies and Salve are optional prayers in the Holy Rosary prayer.
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,
Hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to you we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

The Ave Maria.
The Hail Mary consists of three parts: the first is the stomata of the angelic greeting: «Be glad, you are full of grace, the Lord is with you» (Lk 1:28). The second is formed by the words that Isabel, the Virgin’s cousin, addresses to Our Lady Mary in the Visitation: “Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Lk 1:42).
The third part is an invocation that the Church added much later: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ”
_ The structure of the Ave Maria needed a millennium – from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries – to reach its current structure. The union of the Angelic greeting with the praise of Isabel is due to Severo de Antioquia, who died in 538. Urban IV in the 13th century added the names of “Mary” at the beginning and of “Jesus’ at the end, while the last phrase «now and at the time of our death» appears in a 1350 Carthusian Breviary. The definitive version that is used nowadays was set by Pius V in 1568, on the occasion of the Liturgical Reform. For over 450 years, we Catholics have prayed in this way the Ave Maria, a prayer of praise and filial supplication.

”With the Rosary anything can be achieved. There is a playful comparison. The rosary is a long chain that unites heaven and earth. One of its ends is in our hands and the other in the Blessed Virgin’s hands. As long as the Rosary is prayed, God cannot leave the world, for this prayer exerts great powerl over his Heart. ”*
Help of Christians, pray for us!
The Our Father
This prayer is special in that that Jesus taught it to us (cf. Matthew 6, 9-15) and instructs us to pray to the Father with these same words. At first sight, two distinct parts are perceived: The first one where the Our Father begins with the affirmation of the communion of the children and the recognition of the greatness of a loving Father whom we cannot see because He dwells beyond the reach of our senses. God the Father is praised, we ask that his kingdom come and that we can carry out His his will in the fullest way. The second part of the prayer begins by asking for bread and presents others requests directed to our needs, beginning with forgiveness for our constant weakness, we acknowledge that we intend to forgive our brothers and we beg Him to separate us from evil and temptations *
”Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth, as in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Do not let us fall into temptation and deliver us from evil. Amen”
Our Lady, we ask you to help us at all times to fulfill the plan of God Our Father.
Promises of the Holy Rosary.
Promises of Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary:
1.- Whoever constantly prays my Rosary, will receive any grace they ask of me.
2.- I promise my very special protection and great benefits to those who devoutly pray my Rosary.
3.- The Rosary is the shield against hell, it destroys vice, frees sins and combats heresies.
4.- The Rosary fosters virtues so that souls achieve divine mercy. It replaces in the hearts of men the love of the world with the love of God and elevates them to desire heavenly and eternal things.
5.- The soul entrusted to me by the Rosary will not perish.
6.- He who prays my Rosary with devotion, contemplating its sacred mysteries, will not be oppressed by misfortune, nor will he die an unfortunate death, he will be converted if he is a sinner, he will persevere in grace if he is just and will be admitted to eternal life.
7.- The true devotees of my Rosary will not die without the Sacraments.
8.- All those who pray my Rosary will have in life and death the light and fullness of grace and will receive blessed rewards.
9.- I will quickly release from Purgatory the souls of those people who were devoted to my Rosary.
10.- The children of my Rosary will enjoy a unique glory in heaven.
11.- Everything that is requested through the Rosary will be achieved quickly.
12.- I will aid those who spread the praying of my Rosary.
13.- I have asked my Son for the grace that all the devotees in life and in death receive all the blessings of the heavenly court.
14.- Those who pray the Rosary are all my beloved children and brothers of my begotten son Jesus.
15.- Devotion to the Holy Rosary is a manifest sign of a sure pathway to glory.

The joyful mysteries. They are meditated on on Saturdays and Mondays.
By meditating on these mysteries we enter into the motives of Christian joy. Mary helps us to learn that secret of Christian joy, reminding us that Christianity is above all a gospel, ‘good news’, which centers on the person of Christ, the Word made flesh, the only Savior of the world.
First Mystery: The Incarnation _ The fruit of the mystery: Obedience._
The moment of the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin of Nazareth «Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you» (Lc 1,28) marks the beginning of the joy and this continues when Mary with her “yes” gives her unconditional acceptance by welcoming and determining to fulfill her mission: «Here is the slave of the Lord; May your word to me be fulfilled” (Lk 1:38)
Second Mystery: The Visitation The fruit of the mystery: Love of neighbor.
Joy is perceived in the scene of Our Lady’s encounter with Isabel, where the very voice of Mary and the presence of Christ in her womb create a «jump of joy» (cf. Lk 1:44)
Third mystery: Birth of the Son of God The fruit of the mystery: Detachment.
Full of joy is the scene of Bethlehem, where the birth of the divine Child, the Savior of the world, is sung by the angels and announced to the shepherds as «a great joy» (cf. Lk 2, 10)
Fourth Mystery: The presentation of the Child in the temple The fruit of the mystery: Purity of intention.
The presentation in the temple while expressing the joy of consecration and ecstasy to the elderly Simeon, also contains the prophecy that a sword will pierce the soul of the Mother (cf. Lk 2, 34-35).
Fifth mystery: the child Jesus lost and found in the temple . The fruit of the mystery: Wisdom in things of God.
Jesus of 12 years appears with his divine wisdom in the temple, listening, asking and substantially exercising the role of the one who «teaches».
Saint Teresa of Calcutta said: “Hold on to the Rosary as the leaves of the ivy cling to the tree; because without our Lady we cannot survive.”

The sorrowful mysteries.
Meditated on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Gospels put great emphasis on the sorrowful mysteries of Christ. Christian piety, especially in Lent, with the practice of the Via Crucis, has always dwelled on each one of the moments of the Passion, sensing that they are the culmination of the revelation of love and the source of our salvation.
First mystery: The prayer of Jesus in the garden of the olive trees The fruit of the mystery: True repentance of sins.
The agony begins in Gethsemane, where Christ lives through a particularly difficult moment when he resists all the temptations of humanity and offers himself up for all the sins of men, to say to the Father: «Not my will, but yours be done» Lc 22, 42
Second mystery: The scourging The fruit of the mystery: Spirit of sacrifice.
In the scourging of Jesus, the lashes reach the limit of cruelty and He silently endures torture through love for humanity.
Third mystery: The crown of thorns The fruit of the mystery: Detachment from the material.
The royalty of Christ, king of heaven and earth is transformed into mockery. However in that abysmal humiliation, with the crown of thorns, we can anticipate the triumph of Christ the King.
Fourth mystery: Jesus carries the Cross. _ The fruit of the mystery: Patience for my cross._
Christ plumbs the depths of His Calvary, the path that leads to the Crucifixion.
Fifth mystery: The crucifixion _ The fruit of the mystery: Generosity_
In this tragic hour, the son of God dies, executed by men. Mary, a witness, always at the foot of the Cross, is entrusted to us as our mother.

The glorious mysteries.
Meditated on Sundays and Wednesdays.
They commemorate the triumph of Jesus Christ over death and the power of darkness. It is the hope that is rooted in the Easter victory that keeps us looking toward our last abode: heaven.
First mystery: The resurrection of Our Lord.
The fruit of the mystery: Faith, Hope and Charity.
This is the fact on which Christianity is based, He rose again! Our Faith is not in vain, but it is a living Faith and drives us with joy to live to serve.
Second mystery: The ascension of Jesus to heaven The fruit of the mystery: Desire to go to Heaven.
Jesus, before leaving for heaven, presents himself to his disciples in all his glory and blesses them: “And it happened that, while he blessed them, he separated from them and was taken to heaven. ” Lk 54.51
Third mystery: the coming of the Holy Spirit _ The fruit of the mystery: Desire to live in Grace_.
After the Ascension, the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary, gathered in their small room, receive the Holy Spirit , who encourages them to continue, without fear.
Fourth mystery: The assumption of Our Lady _ The fruit of the mystery: Detachment_. This dogma proclaims that Mary goes to heaven in body and soul, without suffering any corruption in her body. This is a privilege granted for her divine motherhood.
Fifth mystery: The coronation of Mary as queen of everything created _ The fruit of the mystery: Perseverance_
The true dignity of Mary grants grace to her children.

The luminous mysteries.
Meditated on Thursdays
These mysteries were added to the Rosary on October 16, 2002, by Pope St. John Paul II. In these mysteries the public life of Jesus is meditated on, since the whole mystery of Christ is light.
First mystery: Baptism in the Jordan The fruit of the mystery: Opening up to the Holy Spirit.
Jesus enters the water of the river, the sky opens and the voice of the Father proclaims him his chosen Son (cf. Mt 3, 17 par.), And the Spirit descends upon Him to imbue him with the mission that awaits him.
Second mystery: The wedding at Cana _ The fruit of the mystery: To Jesus through Mary_.
The heart of the disciples is opened up to faith thanks to the intervention of Mary, when Christ transforms water into wine ( cf. Jn 2, 1-12).
Third mystery: The announcement of the kingdom of God The fruit of the mystery: Repentance and trust in God.
Jesus announces the arrival of the Kingdom of God (cf. Mc 1:15), forgiving the sins of those who approach him with humble faith (cf. Mc 2, 3-13; Luke 7.47-48). In this way, he began the ministry of mercy, entrusted to the Church, that He will continue to exercise until the end of the world: The sacrament of the reconciliation.
Fourth mystery: the Transfiguration _ The fruit of the mystery: Holiness_.
The glory of the Divine shines on the face of Christ (cf. Lk 9, 35 par.)
Fifth mystery: The institution of the Eucharist The fruit of the mystery: Humility
Christ becomes nourishment with his Body and Blood in the bread and wine, bearing witness «in the extreme» to his love for humanity (Jn 13, 1 ) by offering himself as a sacrifice for our salvation.
Saint Luis María Grignon de Monfort said: «The Rosary is one of the most powerful means we have to relieve the souls of Purgatory.»
Holy Mary, purify my heart and my body
Battle of Muret, the first miracle of the Rosary.
In the thirteenth century, the Albigensian heretics threatened the Church in an alarming way, penetrating everywhere, sowing discord and division among families, leaving churches with no faithful and in ruins. Muret, a small town in southern France was a bulwark against the Albigensians. Pope Innocent III, facing the bleak panorama organized an army of willing men to raise up arms and end the heretical influence once and for all. A Catholic army was formed under the command of Count Simon of Montfort. Count Monfort would face the army of heretics numbering 30,000 with just 1,500 men in his ranks. Outnumbered so badly, Simon of Montfort requested reinforcements to come from northern France, however they never arrived. The night before the battle, the Catholic troops passed by praying the rosary, and at dawn a holy mass was celebrated in which many of the men confessed.
The Catholic’ triumph came on September 12, 1213. In the church of Saint Jacques, where Saint Dominic had prayed during the battle, the first chapel dedicated to the Rosary was built, in gratitude for the victory.
Saint Paul VI said: «The Rosary is a very simple and beautiful prayer, which invites you to have interior peace, to abandon yourself to God and trust in the certainty of obtaining the graces we need through the powerful meditation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose name we constantly invoke.» *

_ Santo Domingo and the Rosary_
Saint Dominic of Guzmán dedicated himself to preaching and his life was characterized by the search for truth, prayer, compassion and fraternity. When passing through France, he finds it invaded by the Albigensian heresy. It is painful to witness the ravages that heretics cause in the ranks of the Christian faithful and he takes the firm decision to win back the country. One night he saw Our Lord ready to launch his anger on the world but the Blessed Virgin presented to Him two men that would be guarantors of conversion in the world: one of the men he recognized as himself and the other was St. Francis of Assisi, who had the same vision. Our Lady appeared to Saint Dominic of Guzmán and gave him the weapon against heretics. The rosary began to spread throughout Christendom and flourished in the Dominican churches of the Order of Our Lady, which later took the name of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Saint Dominic of Guzmán, passionate and apostolic spirit, supporter of the faith, trumpet of the Gospel, light of the world, brilliance of Christ, treasurer of souls, pray for us.
Saint John XXIII said:“The rosary is the Bible of the poor. It is the best gift to Mary. It is prayer for all kinds of people. ”

Message about the Rosary -Sister Lucia.
In 1957 Sister Lucia Dos Santos, one of the visionaries of the apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, said in an interview that “the Rosary is the combat weapon of the spiritual battles of recent times. ” Sister Lucia said that the Blessed Virgin told her cousins and her that God gave the world two final remedies: the Holy Rosary and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The nun, who died in 2005, stressed that with the Holy Rosary we will save ourselves, sanctify ourselves, comfort our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls: “Therefore, the devil will do everything possible to distract us from this devotion; He will give us a multitude of pretexts: fatigue, occupations, etc., so that we don’t pray the Holy Rosary.» In this sense, she stressed that the salvation program is very short and easy because with the Holy Rosary “we will practice the Holy Commandments, we will frequently take advantage of the Sacraments, we will try to perfectly fulfill our duties and do what God wants from each one of us” *
_Our Lady of Fatima in her second appearance said: “When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: ‘My Jesus, forgive us, deliver us from the fire of hell, take all souls to heaven, especially those most in need.’” * .

The Age of the Rosary.
According to some experts in studies about Mary, the so-called era of the Rosary or the era of Mary is the period between 1830 and 1954. The period begins with the visions given to Saint Catalina Labouré about the Miraculous Medal and ends in 1954 with the year of Mary proclaimed by Pope Pius XII. In those 125 years, Our Lady appears 7 times:
– La Salette, France 1847;
– Lourdes, France to Saint Bernardita Soubirous 1858
– Pointmain, France to six small children 1871
-Knock, Ireland 1879
-Fatima, Portugal 1917 to three shepherds, as Our Lady of the Rosary -Beauraing, Belgium 1932
-Banneux, Belgium 1933 as Our Lady of the Poor
Virtually in all those apparitions, Mary asks that we pray constantly and change so that we live according to the will of God. In that period of time, two of the 4 dogmas of Mary are also proclaimed: The Immaculate Conception of Mary (1854) and The Assumption (1850).

Saint Faustina and the message of Mercy.
Saint Faustina Kowalska is known for the message of Mercy that Our Lord reveals to her. However, the fact is that the Virgin Mary appears to her almost as many times as Christ did. Sr. Faustina was very devoted to Mary and in her diary there are numerous references to the love that the saint had for the Rosary. One of the most notable devotions Faustina had was to pray 9,000 Hail Marys in preparation for the Immaculate Conception festival, her favorite festival for Mary. In these meetings with the Virgin, Mary showed St. Faustina the mystery of God’s mercy in her life, taught her about it and accompanied her in the prophetic mission of Mercy.

Mary, for the holy Sister Faustina, was above all the Mother of the Son of God – the Incarnate Mercy – and by the mercy of God she is also the Mother of each one of us, the most caring mother. Based on the book of True Devotion written by St. Louis de Montfort, it must be stated that “the ultimate end of all devotion must be Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, true God and true man. Otherwise, we would have a false and deceptive devotion ”(61); and“ if we establish a firm devotion to the Blessed Virgin it is only to establish more perfectly that devotion to Jesus Christ and to offer an easy and safe means to find the Lord ”(62); and he continues in an affectionate and sincere way: “I turn to You, for a moment, my most beloved Jesus, to complain lovingly to your divine Majesty, that most Christians, even the most educated, ignore the very close union that binds you to your Blessed Mother. You, Lord, are always with Mary and Mary is always with you: otherwise it would cease to be what it is; Mary is so transformed into You by grace, that she no longer lives and is nothing: You, my Jesus, live and reign in Her more perfectly than in all angels and saints ”(63)
So, praying the Rosary and meditating on the mysteries that Our Mother the Church teaches us, we must deepen, by necessity, our love for Mary and a burning desire to please God and fulfill the Divine Plan that He has for us.
